EMTB Forums verdict

The Steppenwolf Tundra 2026 is the German brand's carbon all-mountain platform: 160 mm of travel front and rear (170 mm fork on the top 11.0 trim), the DJI Avinox M1 motor and an integrated 800 Wh battery, all wrapped in a 21.7 kg full-carbon four-bar chassis. With three trims spanning €5,199 to €9,999 and a six-point size table, the Tundra is one of the more aggressively priced Avinox-powered carbon all-mountain bikes on sale — the entry 9.0 brings DJI's drive system to the sub-€5,200 tier, which is genuine value territory.

Drive system and range. The DJI Avinox M1 is the same first-generation Avinox unit found on the Apache Eagle and earlier Avinox builds: 105 Nm of torque, 1000 W manufacturer-claimed peak and a 2.52 kg unit weight. The 800 Wh battery is integrated and not removable, so charging happens on the bike. Real-world range on Avinox M1 with 800 Wh consistently delivers 1,400–1,800 m of climbing per charge depending on rider weight, terrain and assistance mode. Avinox's 2-inch top-tube OLED touchscreen, app and OTA firmware updates round out the ecosystem. Buyers wanting the latest 150 Nm M2S unit should look at higher-spec siblings in the Steppenwolf range or alternative brands.

Geometry and handling. Geometry detail is patchy in the gold table — reach progresses from 435 mm (S) through 465–480 mm (multiple M-spec variants suggest reach-tweak options within size M) to 495 mm (L), but head angle, chainstay and wheelbase data are not gold-listed. Buyers should request a full geometry chart from the dealer. Four-bar suspension is Steppenwolf's proven layout. Three sizes (S, M, L) cover most riders but XL/tall riders will find no option.

Build and value. Three trims share the same carbon chassis. The €5,199 9.0 at 21.7 kg is the entry: SR Suntour Durolux 38-EVO-Boost fork (160 mm), SR Suntour Edge-Evo TR shock (205x65 mm), Magura MT5 4-piston brakes and SRAM Eagle 70 Transmission. The €7,999 10.0 at 21.7 kg steps up to RockShox Lyrik Ultimate air fork (160 mm), Vivid Ultimate shock, SRAM Maven Bronze brakes and X0 Eagle Transmission AXS — strong value at this price for an Avinox-powered carbon bike. The €9,999 11.0 at a remarkable 19.8 kg goes full-house: FOX 38 Factory Kashima fork (170 mm) with GRIP2 damper, FOX Float X2 Factory shock, SRAM Maven Ultimate brakes and X0 Transmission AXS. The 11.0 at 19.8 kg with 170 mm travel and Avinox is genuinely class-leading on the spec/weight equation.

Community-verified strengths. The combination of carbon chassis, Avinox M1 power, 800 Wh battery and aggressive entry pricing (€5,199 for the 9.0) makes the Tundra one of the better-value entry points into Avinox ownership. The 19.8 kg 11.0 trim at €9,999 is a credible competitor to higher-priced Apache, BH or Crestline alternatives at similar spec.

Caveats and known gripes. Software-related motor outages are a documented issue on Avinox builds. @Mel 9.0 on a Tundra 9.0 M1 reports the motor stopped providing assist after a software update and careful cleaning — gears were recognised in 'off' mode but motor support was completely absent at 100 km of use. @Mel 9.0 subsequently took the bike to the dealer and reports it was a "maintenance mode" activation issue from the last firmware update — a software update at the dealer restored normal operation. @elesdee on a Druid CorE with M1 reports the same symptom: motor stopped providing assist, screen showed all values and modes, but no power. @Astro66 explains the underlying calculation logic: gear detection relies on cadence vs speed math, so if assist breaks, gear indication breaks. Buyers should be aware that DJI's firmware is still maturing and dealer visits may be needed for occasional updates. The integrated 800 Wh battery cannot be hot-swapped. Geometry data gaps in the gold table — clarify with the dealer before ordering. Three sizes (S, M, L) limits tall-rider fit. The 9.0's SR Suntour Durolux fork is functional but not in the same league as the Lyrik Ultimate or FOX 38 on higher trims.

Verdict. The Steppenwolf Tundra is one of the better-value Avinox-equipped carbon all-mountain platforms of 2026: M1 motor, 800 Wh battery and three trims from €5,199 to €9,999. It will suit buyers who want Avinox power and a carbon chassis at the lower end of the boutique price spectrum, and who can live with occasional firmware-related dealer visits. Buyers wanting the latest 150 Nm Avinox M2S motor, removable batteries, an XL frame size, or first-hand reliability data from a longer-running platform should look at the BH iLynx+ DL, Apache Eagle or Cube One77 SLX. Production status: current.
