Gen 2 (2019-2021) - first 29er Levo, 700Wh, alloy + carbon

The Specialized Levo 2020 is the Gen 2 (2019 to 2021) Levo, Specialized's first 29er Levo platform and the bike that established the modern full-power eMTB template. Headline numbers: 150 mm front and rear travel, Specialized 2.1 motor at 90 Nm and 560 W peak (2.95 kg), the 700 Wh internal battery on most trims, a 66.0 degree head angle, reach 415 to 480 mm across S to XL, 455 mm fixed chainstay, FSR 4-bar suspension and aluminium or carbon frame options. Production status is discontinued, with the Gen 3 and Gen 4 successors carrying the platform forward. The community verdict is that the Gen 2 Levo was the bike that brought trail-bike geometry and chassis quality to the eMTB world and remains a respected secondhand purchase, though by 2026 standards the 66 degree head angle is conservative and the motor lacks the post-OTA-update polish of current Specialized 2.2.
Drive system and range. The Specialized 2.1 motor at 90 Nm and 560 W peak is the second-generation Specialized in-house drive, manufactured for them by Brose. It was the highest-torque mainstream eMTB motor at launch in 2019 and remained competitive through to 2021/2022. The 700 Wh battery delivered class-leading range at launch, with 30 to 45 miles typical on mixed terrain. The motor has a known belt-drive design that requires service after several thousand miles. Specialized's app-based Mission Control ecosystem was advanced for its time and remains usable on Gen 2 bikes through the current app version.
Geometry and handling. The 66.0 degree head angle is now considered steep for a 150/150 mm trail bike (modern equivalents run 64 to 65 degrees), reflecting the 2019-2021 design era. Reach progresses 415, 435, 455 and 480 mm across S to XL with a fixed 455 mm chainstay and wheelbase scaling 1182 to 1266 mm. The relatively long chainstay paired with the steep head angle gives the Gen 2 Levo predictable, climbing-stable handling characteristic of the period. It is not a chassis for the steepest modern descents but excels on rolling singletrack and aggressive trail riding.
Build and value. Multiple trims existed across the Gen 2 Levo lifespan (Levo Comp, Expert, Pro, S-Works in both aluminium and carbon variants). The Levo Comp Alloy was the volume model. Standout features for the era included the integrated battery, Mission Control app, and FSR rear suspension. Used Gen 2 Levo examples now trade on the second-hand market at prices reflecting their age and motor service status.
Verdict. The Levo 2020 is discontinued, with Gen 3 launched in 2022 and Gen 4 in 2024/2025. As a current-condition new purchase the platform is no longer available, but as a secondhand purchase the Gen 2 Levo remains a competent trail/enduro eMTB at the right price. @BikeBert, a Gen 3 owner, articulates a community sentiment about staying with proven older Levos versus chasing the latest generation: "I'll keep my current pimped-out Levo with its freshly rebuilt motor until something genuinely revolutionary and reliable hits the market". Buy a 2020 Gen 2 Levo if you can find a properly maintained example with a healthy motor and battery (Specialized motor service after 3,000+ miles is standard), you want a 700 Wh trail eMTB at a fraction of new-bike pricing, and you appreciate the platform's well-developed FSR suspension. Look elsewhere if you want modern slack 63-to-64 degree geometry, the latest Specialized 2.2 motor with 666 W and the larger 840 Wh battery (Gen 4), a removable battery (some Gen 4 variants offer this), or simply the freshest available platform. The Gen 2 Levo remains a community classic and one of the most heavily upgraded platforms in the eMTB aftermarket: Cascade Components, Push Industries and similar suspension upgrade specialists have developed kit specifically for the Gen 2 Levo over its production life. Sizing S to XL covers most riders but the S at 415 mm reach is small by modern standards. The platform's quirks include the proprietary Specialized motor service requirement, the 90 Nm headline torque that now sits below current Bosch CX Gen 5 (120 Nm) and DJI Avinox (105 to 150 Nm) figures, and the 25-plus kg weight that is heavy by 2025 standards. For the right second-hand buyer at the right price, the Levo 2020 remains a respectable trail eMTB and a piece of significant eMTB history. The Gen 4 Levo at full price competes with the Amflow PL Carbon, Cube Stereo Hybrid One44 SLX, Bianchi E-Vertic FX Trail and similar 2026 full-power trail eMTB rivals.
