Gen 1 (2016-2018) - original FSR Levo on 27.5+ wheels

The Specialized Turbo Levo 2018 is the original first-generation FSR Levo: an aluminium 4-bar trail eMTB with 140 mm of travel front and rear, the Specialized Turbo 1.3 motor (Brose-built), and 27.5+ wheels. This is the bike that defined the modern full-power eMTB category when launched in 2016, and the 2018 model year was the final Gen 1 iteration before the Gen 2 redesign. Production status is gold-listed as discontinued — the Levo is now in its fourth generation (Gen 4 launched 2025), and the 2018 model is firmly a used-market purchase.
Drive system and range. The Specialized Turbo 1.3 was the first-generation Brose-derived motor with around 90 Nm of torque in its later firmware. It was distinctive for its quiet operation — one of the smoothest and most natural-feeling motors of its era — and for its silent freehub. Battery capacities on Gen 1 Levos ranged from 460 Wh to 504 Wh depending on trim and year. The motor's main weakness was a known firmware-update issue causing power dropouts under sustained high loads. Specialized's Mission Control app and Mastermind TCU dashboard arrived in later years; the Gen 1 Levo used a simpler TCU display.
Geometry and handling. A 66.5 degree head angle is firmly steep by 2026 standards — trail geometry rather than enduro. Reach progresses modestly: 415 mm (S), 435 mm (M), 455 mm (L), 480 mm (XL). The 455 mm chainstay is held constant across sizes and is long for a 140 mm trail bike — prioritising climbing traction and stability. The 27.5+ wheel format (typically 2.6"–3.0" tyres) gives the bike a distinctive cushioned, grippy feel but adds rolling resistance and weight versus modern 29er mullet configurations. The geometry is firmly of its era — modern 64.5-degree, longer-reach Gen 4 Levos are markedly different bikes.
Build and value. No current trim is gold-listed (production-discontinued). Historical 2018 Levo trims spanned Comp Alloy at around £4,500, Expert Carbon at £6,000 and S-Works Carbon at £9,000+ depending on market. On the used market in 2026, a 2018 Levo in good condition typically sells for £1,500–£2,500, depending on motor condition (a critical buyer-check item), battery health and overall condition.
Community-verified strengths. The Gen 1 Levo built a strong forum following — @BikeBert (a Gen 3 owner) explicitly references "my current pimped-out Levo with its freshly rebuilt motor" as worth keeping over the Gen 4 — signalling that long-term Levo owners value the platform's parts ecosystem and refinement potential. Specialized's UK dealer network is one of the most extensive in cycling.
Caveats and known gripes. Motor reliability is the headline concern for any used Gen 1 Levo purchase. Specialized 1.3 motors have a known failure profile and rebuilds are essentially mandatory for any high-mileage used purchase. Battery capacity degradation after 6+ years is a real factor — a 504 Wh original capacity at 80% health is around 400 Wh effective. The 66.5 degree head angle and 27.5+ wheels are firmly of their era and will feel dated against any modern trail-geometry alternative. @Idlefrog notes the Levo Gen 4 has stepped up to 666 W motor and 840 Wh battery — the technology curve has moved meaningfully since 2018. Original FSR linkage parts and Specialized-proprietary components can be expensive to source for older platforms.
Verdict. The Specialized Turbo Levo 2018 was the bike that defined the modern full-power eMTB segment, and remains a competent trail platform on the used market for buyers who understand the technology compromises of its era. It will suit budget-constrained buyers who want into eMTB ownership for under £2,500 and are comfortable with the motor-refurbishment and battery-health checks required on any 2018 used purchase. Anyone wanting current motor power, modern geometry, fresh battery capacity or full manufacturer warranty should look at the current Levo Gen 4, the Levo SL Gen 2, or the value-leading Canyon Grand Canyon:ON 2026 / Cube Stereo Hybrid One77 SLX alternatives. Production status: discontinued.
