Lightweight Shimano EP-powered trail/enduro eMTB family (SL and LT)

The Orbea Rise 2026 is the Spanish brand's pioneering lightweight eMTB, now in its third major generation and updated for 2026 around Shimano's STePS DU-EP801 drive with a new HMI control unit and electronic dropper integration. The aluminium H30 base trim runs 140 mm of travel front and rear on a single-pivot chassis, with a claimed 19 kg system weight, a 65 degree head angle and a 430 to 505 mm reach range across four sizes. £4,499 for the H30 aluminium entry trim. Community verdict: the bike that defined the lightweight category, now running an updated Shimano EP801 with proper UK community history and dealer reach.
Drive system and range. The Shimano STePS EP801 in Rise tune (also known as EP8-RS) is a detuned version of the full-power EP8/EP801, configured for around 60 Nm of torque and reduced peak power. The 2026 update brings the new HMI control unit and electronic dropper integration, which clean up the cockpit and integrate the dropper actuation with the bike's electrical system. Real-world consumption from long-term Rise owners runs around 7.7 Wh per km on mixed terrain with 800 m of elevation per ride, or roughly 124 Wh per hour. The Rise traditionally pairs with a 360 to 540 Wh internal battery (depending on platform), with a bottle-mount range extender for longer rides. Shimano's worldwide service network adds reassurance for buyers wanting dealer-led motor support.
Geometry and handling. A 65 degree head angle is slightly steeper than the modern trail norm and reflects the Rise's positioning as a versatile, do-everything lightweight platform. Reach grows from 430 mm in S to 505 mm in XL, a healthy 75 mm spread that suits both shorter and taller riders. The 445 mm chainstay is identical across sizes, which keeps the bike agile on size M and L. Wheelbases run 1235 to 1310 mm. 29-inch wheels across the range. The single-pivot suspension layout keeps the chassis simple and accessible, with most owners reporting natural feel and well-balanced trail-to-climb behaviour.
Build and value. The H30 aluminium trim at £4,499 is the entry to the Rise line, with Orbea's wider range climbing through to the carbon M-Team. Build details at this trim are dealer-confirmed but typically include Shimano SLX or Deore drivetrain, RockShox 35 Silver or similar entry-spec fork, and a value-led component package. The standout strength is the price-and-platform combination: a 19 kg lightweight eMTB at £4,499 with a proven Shimano motor and Orbea's chassis pedigree undercuts most carbon rivals by £2,000 or more. The questionable note is that the entry trim's lower-spec components may not match the chassis's intrinsic capability, with hard-riding owners typically upgrading fork, shock and brakes over time.
Community-verified strengths. Long-term Rise owners report exceptional reliability across multiple model years, with M20 and M10 carbon variants logging multi-year mileage with no significant motor issues. The chassis is universally praised as natural-feeling, with the detuned EP8-RS striking a satisfying balance between assist and pedal feel. Orbea's bike-customiser tool lets buyers spec individual components, which is a unique buyer-side advantage compared to fixed-trim brands. Multiple owners flag the Rise as the bike that introduced them to the lightweight category and changed their entire perception of eMTBs.
Caveats and known gripes. The 2026 Rise LT variants use headset cable routing, which requires specialised handlebars with under-grip cable channels and complicates aftermarket cockpit changes. The EP8-RS motor does not have overrun capability on certain configurations, which some owners flag as feeling less natural at high cadence than the full EP801. The single-pivot suspension layout is simple and reliable but less compliant on sharp-edge bumps than multi-link rivals like the Spectral:ONfly or Levo SL. And the Rise weight advantage shrinks significantly once a range extender is added, with the carbon range extender setup edging closer to mid-power Bosch SX platforms on total system weight.
Verdict. The Rise 2026 suits the lightweight eMTB rider who values proven Shimano reliability, Orbea's chassis pedigree, customisable build options and a sharper entry price than carbon rivals. Riders chasing latest-generation motor power (DJI Avinox or Bosch CX-R), removable bigger batteries or slacker descending geometry should look at the Specialized Levo SL Gen 2, the Trek Fuel EXe or the Cube AMS Hybrid One44. Production status: current.
