Aluminium 29er full-suspension trail on Shimano EP801 85Nm

The Merida eONE-FORTY 2025 is the trail-focused full-suspension eMTB from Merida, the LITE 750 trim built around a Shimano EP801 motor (85 Nm torque, 600 W manufacturer-claimed peak) and a 750 Wh Trendpower battery on a LITE 6061 hydroformed aluminium chassis. Travel is 150 mm front and 143 mm rear via single pivot suspension. Single LITE 750 trim at £4,999, claimed weight 23.5 kg. Five sizes from XS to XL, reach 431-511 mm, head angle 66.5 degrees flat, chainstays 449 mm. The community read in one line: a solid mid-market trail eMTB with a generous 750 Wh battery at a competitive price, hampered by traditional trail geometry and a documented stock rear shock issue on prior models.
Drive system and range. The Shimano EP801 is the proven flagship Shimano motor — 85 Nm torque, smooth, well-supported by the E-TUBE PROJECT app and a wide international dealer network. Post the wiring harness updates, the motor is generally reliable. The 750 Wh battery is competitive in the Shimano ecosystem and is removable for off-bike charging. Real-world range will sit in the 50 to 70 km territory in trail mode on mixed terrain, with extreme cases pushing further on Eco. An optional 360 Wh range extender is available for serious all-day duties.
Geometry and handling. Traditional trail geometry. 66.5 degree head angle is firmly mainstream-trail (steeper than enduro norms), suiting lighter, nimble handling. Reach steps cleanly through the five sizes: 431 mm (XS), 451 mm (S), 471 mm (M), 491 mm (L), and 511 mm (XL). Chainstays are held at 449 mm flat across the range. Wheelbase scales from 1191 mm (XS) to 1280 mm (XL). The XS size at 431 mm reach is genuinely catered for shorter riders, and the XL at 511 mm reach is properly long for tall buyers — a generous size spread.
Build and value. Single LITE 750 trim at £4,999 (23.5 kg). At this price expect Marzocchi Bomber Z2 or Rockshox 35 Gold class suspension at 150 mm front, a Suntour Edge or RockShox Deluxe Select+ rear shock, Shimano BR-MT420 or BR-MT520 4-piston brakes with 203 mm rotors, and a Shimano Deore 12-speed drivetrain. £4,999 for a 750 Wh Shimano EP801 trail eMTB with proper five-size geometry is genuinely competitive value at this price point.
Community-verified strengths.
- @Brennan20 documented his 2021 Merida eONE-FORTY 500 long-term — 882 km on the odometer with Fox 36 eMTB fork upgrade and Fox DPX2 shock upgrade, listed at £2,200 used. Long-term resale value holds up.
- The LITE 6061 hydroformed alloy frame with cast motor bracket and moulded chainstay/downtube protection is well-considered for trail use, with integrated frame protection out the box.
- Genuine five-size range from XS to XL with proper reach progression (431 to 511 mm) is generous for the price.
Caveats and known gripes.
- @Studley documented a stock rear shock manufacturing issue on the prior eONE-FORTY 400: wrong grade of grease clogs a port, causing the air chambers to equalise and pedal strikes every 150 km. Confirm with your dealer this is resolved on the 2025 model and consider an upgrade to 205x60 mm for additional travel.
- 66.5 degree head angle is on the steeper side of modern trail geometry. Riders coming off slacker platforms may find it nervous on technical descents.
- Fixed 449 mm chainstays across all five sizes means no size-tuning.
- Single pivot suspension layout at this travel is less progressive than four-bar or DW-link alternatives.
Verdict. The Merida eONE-FORTY LITE 750 2025 is a sensible, value-orientated trail eMTB for buyers who want the Shimano EP801 ecosystem in an aluminium chassis at under £5,000. It suits intermediate trail riders, particularly those who appreciate the generous five-size range and the 750 Wh battery for long days out. Look elsewhere if you want modern slack-and-long geometry, the latest Bosch CX Gen 5 or DJI motor tech, or progressive four-bar suspension. Production status: current, single LITE 750 trim, five sizes.
