Spectralon AL 2020
How current the bike is — newer chassis, motor and battery score higher. 10 = brand-new, 0 = legacy.

The Canyon Spectral:ON AL 2020 is Canyon's original aluminium all-mountain eMTB and one of the most widely-bought direct-to-consumer eMTBs of the early Shimano STEPS E8000 era. Headline numbers: 150mm fork, 150mm rear, Shimano STEPS E8000 motor at 70Nm with a 2.89kg motor mass, a removable 504Wh Shimano BT-E8035 battery, 22.27kg claimed, 66.0 to 66.8 degree head angle and reach 405 to 485mm across XS, SM, MD, LG and XL. Priced at GBP 3,999 at launch. The 2020 Spectral:ON AL is now a discontinued model but remains in the used market in significant numbers; this verdict frames it for buyers considering a used purchase or owners researching their bike.
Drive system and range. The Shimano STEPS E8000 was the first credible mid-power Shimano eMTB motor and held the segment for several years before being superseded by EP8 and EP801. 70Nm of torque at 250W rated power. The 504Wh BT-E8035 battery is removable through the downtube. Real-world range on 504Wh is roughly 800 to 1,200m of vertical and two to three hours of mixed trail riding in Trail/Boost modes: modest by 2025/2026 standards but the norm at the 2020 launch. Shimano's E-Tube ecosystem at this generation was basic but stable; the E8000 has a strong durability track record across the wider Shimano eMTB owner base.
Geometry and handling. 66.0 degrees on XS, easing to 66.8 degrees across SM, MD, LG and XL: geometry consistent with 2020-era trail eMTB norms but conservative by 2025 standards. Reach steps cleanly: 405 (XS), 425 (SM), 445 (MD), 465 (LG), 485 (XL). Chainstays are a uniform 430mm: short and quick. Wheelbase tops out at 1233mm on XL. The package biases toward XC/trail use over slack-and-low descent capability; riders coming from a slacker modern bike will find the Spectral:ON AL's geometry steeper than expected.
Build and value. One base trim at GBP 3,999 at launch. Spec at the time paired RockShox or Fox 35-class fork with a Shimano XT or SLX drivetrain and Shimano four-piston brakes. In the 2025 used market the Spectral:ON AL 2020 typically sells for GBP 1,500 to 2,500 depending on condition and battery health, making it one of the most accessible used eMTB entries. Standout: removable 504Wh Shimano battery on a low-CG aluminium frame at an accessible used price. Questionable: 2020-era geometry, E8000 motor reaching end-of-firmware-support life, and Canyon's well-documented "Battery-Gate" battery sourcing issues on Spectral:ON CF predecessors that have impacted the wider Spectral:ON owner base.
Caveats and known gripes.
- Shock failure risk. A community-linked Canyon advisory notes coil shock shaft stress is high on the Spectral:ON frame and can lead to shock failures. Buyers should confirm shock service history.
- Battery sourcing. Canyon's Spectral:ON and Torque:ON owners have experienced long delays for replacement batteries (the wider "Battery-Gate" issue); ageing 504Wh BT-E8035 packs may need replacement at significant cost.
- 2020 geometry. 66.0 to 66.8 degree head angle is steeper than 2025 norms; pure descenders will find rivals more confidence-inspiring on steep terrain.
- Direct-to-consumer service. Canyon sells direct; service routing for older models requires planning and can be slow.
- Discontinued. Production status: discontinued. New buys are only via used market; warranty support is limited to the original warranty period.
- E8000 motor life. Shimano's STEPS E8000 is reaching the end of its firmware update cycle as EP8 and EP801 take precedence; expect feature parity gaps versus newer motors.
Verdict. The 2020 Spectral:ON AL is one of the most accessible entries into used Shimano STEPS E8000 trail/all-mountain eMTB ownership in the UK and Europe, with a 504Wh removable battery, modern-for-2020 geometry across five sizes from XS to XL and a strong used-market presence. It suits riders seeking a budget Shimano-powered platform from a recognised brand with original warranty paperwork. Buyers needing modern slack geometry, fresh battery technology, OTA firmware support or new-bike warranty should look at the current Canyon Neuron:ON AL (Bosch CX Gen 5), Specialized Levo Alloy or Whyte E-Lyte. Production status: discontinued.
